As is the cyclical nature of surfboard design, channel bottoms of one fashion or another are again all the rage. Sexy, sleek and fast – what’s not to like (unless you’re a sander). This years’ Best In Show will feature an array of incredible and unique channel bottomed surf designs. Each exhibitor is allowed to put one board into the Best In Show Competition. These board builders are the world’s best of the best and we’ll see some mind-blowing designs and concepts, and probably some stuff that’ll have us scratching our heads. Last years winners include Pat Rawson, Danny Hess, Steve Coletta, and Mike Wallace.
Legendary surfboard craftsman Al Merrick will be honored in the Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters Shape-off presented by US Blanks. Ten international shapers will attempt to replicate one of Merrick’s classic designs. The competition takes place during The Boardroom International Surfboard Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on May 6 & 7, 2017.
“I’ve been drawn to surfing and surfboard design my whole life,” said Al Merrick. “I am thrilled to be an Icons of Foam honoree. The list of past honorees, which includes John Bradbury and Renny Yater, is remarkable. I’m quite humbled and I look forward to a great shape-off at The Boardroom in Del Mar.”

Been wondering what to do with that broken foamie surfboard , or that that growing pile of worn out wetsuits in the garage?
Well the wait is over… because at this year’s Boardroom Show, Sustainable Surf has partnered with local San Diego based INT Softboards and Suga Mats through their Waste to Waves program. You can up-cycle your wasted “softboard” and wetsuits into sharp new surf gear, and keep them out of the garbage dump.
Look for the Waste to Waves Up-Cycling Center as you enter the show on Saturday morning, drop off your old gear, and we’ll give it a new life. INT is offering a $100 credit toward a new 7ft+ longboard in exchange for your old softboard and Suga will give you 10% off their amazing up-cycled yoga mats for that worn out old wetsuit.
Heading to the board demo on Sunday to test drive a new ECOBOARD? The Up-cycling Center will also be there until 10am spreading the eco-vibes. Suga will also be taking suits directly at their booth throughout the show.
Sustainable Surf is also partnering with local Mizu water bottles, to provide a free water-refill station at their booth, and they’ll even be giving away a couple of ECOBOARDS made with materials from their partners Entropy Resins, Sicomin Resins and Marko Foam.
So stop by the Sustainable Surf booth during the show to check-in about all they have going on ; and to check-out all the certified ECOBOARDS on display from Channel Islands, Firewire, Rob Machado, INT Softboards, Maurice Cole, Starboard, Roberts, Carver and more!
